Legal Writing for Real Lawyers is a must for lawyers, law students and anyone involved in the legal field. It is clear and concise, yet contains elements of humor which make it a good enjoyable read. Bowlan cuts through all the legalize and focuses on actual content of legal writing, in getting your or your client's point across, instead of current trends in overly verbose form.
Mr. Bowlan's style of writing is immediately engaging. I would not have expected the wry wit that makes this book hard to put down. Even though I am not a lawyer I was at once entertained and informed by the common sense approach to writing and consider this book an excellent primer for anyone who wishes to improve in writing skill. I have recommended this book to a number of friends only some of whom are lawyers. A great read! Looking forward to the next work by Mr. Bowlan.
I don't know what JayR's background is, but he doesn't know what he's talking about. I'm in my third decade of practicing law, and Bowlan is the only author on the subject I've read who cuts through the conventional pap and tells the practicing lawyer what he needs to know. He fixed the readability issues in the second edition, just published weeks ago, and his new section on summary judgment is very enlightening. It doesn't say "second edition" on the cover, but he's added a subtitle "Practical Advice from the Trenches." I definitely recommend you forget the 2010 edition and get the improved 2013 edition (link attached).Legal Writing for Real Lawyers A Practical Guide from the Trenches
